Why We Avoid Cosmetic Extras
We decided early on to keep cosmetic extras out of our candles. But why? There are many beautiful dyes, glitters, botanicals, gemstones, and similar cosmetic additives, so why would we intentionally keep them out of our candles? We have a few reasons for this.
The first reason is because of the increased risk of fire. Even if the candle was carefully designed, extra additives may still burn or explode and cause a fire. Glitter and botanicals may catch fire and ruin your safe candle experience. Gemstones may crack or explode and cause serious harm. Since one of our foundational goals with our candles is to provide a safe experience for you and your family, we never use these additives.
Another reason we stay away from cosmetic extras is that they can hamper the performance of the candle's burn. Even when placed at the edge of the candle, gemstones or other objects can shift towards the wick and interfere with how the wick burns through the wax. Often, these items can cause tunneling in the wax, meaning you lose out on hours of burn time and are left with a lot of wax waste. We test and retest how our wicks perform to give you the best burn experience possible. Because of this, we never include extra additives that might negatively affect the burn.
One of the most personal reasons we don't add cosmetic extras is that they can negatively affect the candle’s scent. When we experimented with dyes before we created our first final product, we found that the dyed candles gave off a noticeable waxy, unpleasant smell that clouded the intended fragrance. We don’t want to harm the clean, full-bodied scents our customers love.
Finally, one of the biggest reasons for not adding anything extra to our candles is that many cosmetic additives are toxic and release harmful chemicals into the air when burned. One of our foundational priorities with our candles is to provide a non-toxic, safe candle experience. Because of that, we keep anything questionable out of our candles.
At Wick & Spice, we want to give you the best candle experience possible. We stay away from cosmetic extras because it often harms the experience we hope to offer our customers. Nobody should have to sacrifice their health and safety to enjoy a candle.
