The Chemicals in Your Home

The fragrance industry can be a very toxic, very secretive environment. At Wick & Spice, we value transparency, so let’s look at some important questions you might have about the chemicals in fragrance. How dangerous are the chemicals found in your scented products? Are there any alternatives that actually smell nice and perform well? What does it mean when we label our fragrances as “clean”?

Let's take a look at some context in the fragrance industry first:

  1. According to The International Fragrance Association, in 2022 there were 3,619 different chemicals that were used for producing fragrances.

  2. The sad reality is that this list of chemicals includes known carcinogens, reproductive toxins, neurotoxicants, and allergens.

  3. Fragrance ingredients are currently not required to be disclosed to the customer, so you can't be sure which ones you are bringing into your home.

  4. While the fragrance industry has been trusted to “self-regulate” with the testing done by the Research Institute for Fragrance Materials, the testing done is secret. This is both largely unhelpful and dangerous to the everyday consumer.

  5. In October of 2021, the Cosmetic Fragrance and Flavor Ingredient Right to Know Act was introduced to the House of Representatives. This bill would offer much more transparency to consumers in terms of the dangerous chemicals that are used in the USA.

At Wick & Spice, we think our customers deserve transparency, especially when it comes to choosing between safe ingredients and extremely harmful ingredients. We exclusively use clean scents, which means:

  1. The fragrance oils we use are revolutionary in the fragrance industry. Most fragrance manufacturers give up trying to produce safe fragrances because of the difficulty, but the fragrances we use have met overwhelming success while being safe for the home.

  2. Our fragrances are completely free of the following: known or suspected carcinogens, mutagens, reproductive toxins, organ toxins, and acute toxins. They also completely adhere to the California Prop 65 list.

  3. Our fragrances allow you to have total peace of mind while also enjoying top-quality scents you love.

At Wick & Spice, we believe it should be easy to know exactly what you bring into your home. We're here to provide a transparent and safe alternative for your family to enjoy together. You can read more about our story here.
